Aston Villa handed Manchester City a major setback in the English Premier League title race after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Villa Park on Saturday Afternoon.
Nicolas Jackson was the hero for Unai Emery’s side, scoring twice to help Villa end City’s perfect start to the league campaign and inflict their first defeat of the season.
Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute after capitalising on a defensive error by Manchester City defender Marc Guéhi. The forward finished clinically to give the hosts an early advantage, with captain John McGinn providing the assist.
Manchester City responded strongly after the break, with Erling Haaland restoring parity in the 53rd minute through a powerful header to register his ninth Premier League goal of the season.
However, Villa quickly regained the lead as Jackson struck again in the 61st minute, completing his brace with a clinical finish to put the hosts back in front.
City pushed for another equaliser but struggled to break down Villa’s defence, with the home side holding firm to secure all three points.
Haaland came close to rescuing a point late in the match, but Ian Maatsen intervened to block his header and preserve Villa’s advantage.
The result marks a significant statement from Emery’s men, who have continued to demonstrate their ability to challenge the Premier League’s top sides.
For Manchester City, the defeat ends their flawless league start under manager Enzo Maresca and leaves the team facing an early test of its response in the title race.
Villa, meanwhile, will take confidence from a disciplined performance and Jackson’s decisive contribution as they look to build momentum in the Premier League.
The victory further strengthens Villa’s recent record against City, having now won four of their last six league meetings before Saturday’s encounter.
