Tanzania’s opposition party, CHADEMA, has raised concerns over the continued denial of access to its detained chairman, Tundu Lissu, after three of his lawyers were reportedly blocked from visiting him in prison.
In a public statement dated October 26, 2026, CHADEMA said Lissu had begun a hunger strike to protest the alleged denial of his rights to legal assistance, communication and access to his representatives.
The party identified the three lawyers as Dickson Matata, Doris Kafuku and Neema Massame, who reportedly went to the prison on Monday seeking to meet and consult with Lissu but were denied entry.
CHADEMA expressed concern over the development, saying the denial of access was particularly troubling as Lissu had already embarked on a hunger strike.
The opposition party warned that the situation raised serious questions about the availability of legal services and the protection of Lissu’s rights while in detention.
“CHADEMA is concerned about the denial of access to the party chairman, especially at this time when he has already begun a hunger strike,” the party said in its statement.
The party called on the relevant authorities to ensure that its lawyers are allowed to visit Lissu without unnecessary obstacles, in accordance with the law, and to take urgent measures to safeguard his health, safety and well-being.
CHADEMA also pledged to continue updating the public on Lissu’s condition and developments surrounding the matter.
The statement was signed by Brenda Rupia, the party’s Director of Communications and Information.
Lissu’s reported hunger strike and the alleged restrictions on access to his lawyers have heightened concerns over his access to legal representation and welfare in custody. CHADeMA did not provide further details on the authorities’ reasons for denying the lawyers access in the statement.
