Former The Nairobi Hospital chairman and veteran dentist Dr Chris W. Obura has died, marking the loss of a prominent figure whose career spanned healthcare, medical education and corporate leadership.

Obura died on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, according to a condolence statement issued on Friday, October 16, by Kenya Hospital Association (KHA) Board of Management Chairman Dr Barcley Onyambu.

In the statement, Onyambu conveyed condolences on behalf of the association’s board, management and the entire Nairobi Hospital fraternity, describing Obura’s death as a moment of profound sorrow.

“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart, on behalf of the Board of Management of the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), Management, and the entire Nairobi Hospital fraternity, I convey our deepest condolences following the passing of Dr Chris W. Obura on 13th October, 2026,” the statement read.

Obura’s Legacy at The Nairobi Hospital

Obura was remembered as a pioneering African doctor who cared for patients at The Nairobi Hospital before rising through its leadership ranks to become chairman of its Board of Management.

During his tenure, he played a key role in steering governance reforms, modernising hospital operations and overseeing capital expansion projects aimed at strengthening the institution’s healthcare services.

According to Onyambu, Obura’s leadership helped position The Nairobi Hospital as a leading healthcare institution in Eastern and Central Africa.

“His legacy at The Nairobi Hospital shall live to serve generations of mankind,” Onyambu stated.

His contribution to the hospital’s development forms a significant part of his professional legacy, particularly in strengthening institutional governance and supporting the modernisation of one of Kenya’s leading private healthcare facilities.

Career in Dentistry and Medical Education

Beyond his leadership at The Nairobi Hospital, Obura had a distinguished career in dentistry and public health, serving in several senior professional and government positions.

He pursued dental training at Makerere University before undertaking further studies in the United Kingdom, including training at the University of London’s Guy’s Medical and Dental School.

He also obtained the Licentiate in Dental Surgery qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, according to his professional profile published in ICEA Lion’s 2018 integrated report.

Upon returning to Kenya, Obura served as Chief Dental Officer in the Ministry of Health from 1965 to 1971, contributing to the development of dental services in the country.

He also served as an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s medical school between 1968 and 1971 and worked as a consultant dental and oral surgeon at Kenyatta National Hospital.

His career further included private dental practice, which he maintained for several decades, alongside professional engagements at other medical facilities in Nairobi.

Obura also held leadership positions within the dental profession, serving as president of the East African Dental Association from 1970 to 1974 and chairman of the Kenya Dental Association between 1977 and 1981.

Corporate Leadership Beyond Healthcare

Obura’s influence extended into Kenya’s corporate sector, where he served on the boards of several companies and held senior leadership positions.

According to Olympia Capital Holdings’ corporate profile, he served as the company’s chairman from 1998. He also chaired Express Kenya Limited and held directorships in other Kenyan firms.

His leadership roles included chairing the Kenya Hospital Association and The Nairobi Hospital between 2002 and 2012, according to ICEA Lion’s 2018 integrated report.

His experience in medicine, institutional management and corporate governance placed him among professionals who helped shape both healthcare delivery and business leadership in Kenya.

Obura’s death comes months after The Nairobi Hospital mourned veteran gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, who died aged 83. In a statement issued on May 2, 2026, the hospital paid tribute to Obwaka’s longstanding contribution to patient care and institutional leadership.

As tributes continue to emerge, Obura is being remembered for his pioneering role in Kenyan dentistry, his contribution to medical education and public health, and his leadership in the development and modernisation of The Nairobi Hospital.
