Four people charged with the murder of a US-based couple in Nyamira County have been acquitted by the High Court.

The accused, Ezekiel Mogeni Migiro, Peris Ondara, Dennis Ondara Clement and Peter Njoroge Kirika, were set free after Justice Thripsisa Cherere ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The four had been charged in connection with the deaths of Edward Morema and his wife, Grace Mong’ina, who were killed on March 20, 2023, at Egetugi Village in Nyamakoroto, Gesima Ward, Kitutu Masaba Constituency.

In her judgment delivered virtually on Thursday morning, Justice Cherere dismissed the prosecution’s evidence, finding that it did not sufficiently establish the accused persons’ involvement in the murders.

The judge ruled that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had failed to prove the case against any of the four accused persons to the required legal standard.

Among those acquitted was Peris Ondara, a former teacher at Tala Primary School in Machakos County. Dennis Ondara Clement is her brother.
