Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has announced her exit from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), ending months of speculation over her political future within the party.

Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, October 8, Wamuchomba said she would neither seek nor campaign for any political seat on a UDA ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The outspoken lawmaker said the decision followed extensive consultations with her constituents, community leaders, church leaders and other political actors.

“After soul searching, serious consultation with my voters, community leaders, and the church, I feel that my conscience does not allow me to dine, associate and cluster with people who have no regard for others,” Wamuchomba said.

She added: “Therefore, I am not going to defend or campaign or seek for any political seat through my party, UDA.”

Wamuchomba accused sections of the UDA leadership of failing to hold some party officials accountable for remarks and actions she said undermined other members of the party.

She singled out Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, whom she accused of making remarks that appeared to target the Mount Kenya community.

According to Wamuchomba, her previous calls for action against Duale were ignored, leaving her feeling that she was not respected within the ruling party.

“Going forward, I am going to sit back and echo what Kenyans are saying against characters like Duale,” she said.

The Githunguri MP said she would now align herself with the concerns of ordinary Kenyans and openly criticise the government where necessary.

“I am going to join Kenyans to call out those people because alone in government nobody can hear me,” she stated.

Wamuchomba has in the past threatened to leave UDA over what she described as inflammatory remarks by some senior party officials, including Duale and UDA Secretary-General Hassan Omar.

She had also criticised what she termed selective accountability within the party, arguing that individuals considered close to President William Ruto were shielded from consequences.

The MP previously aligned herself with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024.

However, she was later seen at a UDA delegates’ meeting at State House on January 26, 2026, amid renewed speculation over her political allegiance.

Her latest decision not to defend her Githunguri seat on a UDA ticket comes amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Several leaders have recently shifted political allegiance, including Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who moved from UDA to the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), as well as Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, who joined DCP.

Wamuchomba said she would announce her next political vehicle as she seeks to retain the Githunguri parliamentary seat in 2027.
