The Ministry of Health has given health facilities an additional one month to complete their transition from the Provider Portal to the Health Management Information System (HMIS).

The Ministry said the extension is intended to allow facilities that have not completed the migration to finalise the process, while assuring Kenyans that the transition will not disrupt access to healthcare services.

“No patient will be denied care because a facility has not completed the transition,” the Ministry said.

The migration is part of efforts to establish a standardised, interoperable and paperless health information system across public, faith-based and private facilities.

All 6,427 public Level 2 to 4 facilities have completed the transition, according to the Ministry.

Among public Level 5 facilities, four have completed the migration while 23 are still in progress. They are expected to complete the process by October 30, 2026.

Only 38 of the 518 contracted faith-based facilities have so far completed the transition, with the remaining facilities also expected to meet the October 30 deadline.

At the national referral level, Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital are expected to complete the process by the end of next week, while other Level 6 facilities have until October 30.

The Ministry said 28 existing digital health information systems used by private facilities have been certified by the Digital Health Agency under the Digital Health Act.

The agency will conduct Rapid Results Initiatives throughout October to support private facilities and accelerate compliance.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale is also scheduled to meet health sector associations on Friday, October 2, to review facility-by-facility transition plans and agree on timelines for completing the migration.
