IG Kanja Outlines 2027 Election Security Plan Before Senate Committee

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has outlined the National Police Service’s preparedness for the 2027 General Election, pledging enhanced security operations, intelligence-led policing and strict action against criminal gangs and political violence.

Kanja appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to brief lawmakers on measures being implemented to ensure peaceful, inclusive and secure elections.

During the session chaired by Senator Mohammed Said Chute, the police chief detailed the service’s election preparedness plans, including security deployments, specialised training for officers and coordination with other security agencies and stakeholders.

He said the National Police Service (NPS) was drawing lessons from previous electoral processes to strengthen its operational strategies ahead of the upcoming polls.

Kanja emphasised that the service would prioritise intelligence-led preventive policing, professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights while maintaining political neutrality throughout the electoral period.“

The National Police Service remains strictly guided by its Election Preparedness Work Plan,” the Inspector General said, according to a statement from the service.

The plan prioritises maintaining law and order, strategic security deployments and prompt investigations into criminal activities.

The Inspector General issued a stern warning against organised criminal gangs, political goons and individuals involved in online incitement and the spread of misinformation.

He said the service was strengthening its capacity to address emerging security threats through specialised training and a multi-agency coordination framework aimed at disrupting criminal networks.

The measures are intended to enhance the police service’s ability to prevent violence, respond to security incidents and investigate offences that could undermine the credibility and peaceful conduct of the 2027 General Election.

Kanja also responded to questions and sought to clarify various aspects of the service’s preparedness during the interactive engagement with senators.

The committee meeting was attended by Vice Chairperson Senator James Lomenen Ekomwa, alongside Senators Consolata Wakwabubi, Joseph Githuku Kamau, Godfrey Atieno Osotsi and Daniel Maanzo.Kanja was accompanied by Administration Police Service Director of Security Operations Jackson Kangani and his personal assistant, James Murithi.

The briefing comes as security agencies intensify preparations for the 2027 polls, with policing, political neutrality and the prevention of electoral violence expected to remain key issues in the run-up to the General Election.
