Former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila has been named leader of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a new politico-military movement launched in Goma on Monday, October 12, 2026.
The formation of the FRN marks the dissolution of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) and its allied M23 movement, with key figures from the groups appointed to leadership positions in the new organisation.
Bertrand Bisimwa, Corneille Nangaa and Major General Sultani Makenga have been named vice-presidents of the movement.
The development signals a restructuring of the political and military alliance, although further details on the FRN’s leadership structure, objectives and operational plans were not provided in the announcement.
Kabila, who served as DRC president from 2001 to 2019, has remained a significant figure in the country’s political affairs since leaving office.
The launch of the new movement comes amid continued political and security tensions in eastern DR Congo, where armed groups, including M23, have been involved in prolonged conflict with government forces.
