The Government of Kenya has introduced mandatory travel health insurance for foreign nationals entering the country for stays of less than 12 months, with the requirement taking effect on October 5, 2026.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, October 14, the High Commission of India in Nairobi advised Indian nationals planning to travel to Kenya to obtain the prescribed insurance before arrival, regardless of when their Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) was issued or their travel arrangements were made.
The High Commission urged travellers to comply with the new requirement and carry proof of valid insurance to avoid potential inconveniences during airline boarding and immigration clearance.
The advisory further cautioned that existing international travel or medical insurance policies will not substitute for the prescribed mandatory cover.
Indian nationals have also been advised to consult official Government of Kenya portals for further information, including details on applicable exemptions.
The new requirement affects foreign visitors entering Kenya from October 5, 2026, subject to the exemptions provided under the applicable regulations.
