The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has reassured Kenyans that public gatherings can proceed amid concerns over Ebola Virus Disease, urging the public to observe basic hygiene measures and follow official health guidance.
In a public advisory issued by Secretary-General Dr Lyndah Kemunto, the association said there were no current restrictions on travel, trade, transport or public gatherings following communication from the Ministry of Health on October 11, 2026.
The advisory noted that weddings, funerals, religious gatherings, conferences, school activities and sporting events could continue, provided basic preventive measures were observed.
These include regular handwashing, temperature checks at entry points where applicable, staying at home when unwell and avoiding contact with the blood or other body fluids of potentially infected individuals.
KMA also clarified that Ebola does not spread through the air. Transmission occurs through direct contact with the blood, body fluids or contaminated items of an infected person or someone who has died from the disease.
The association further noted that people who are infected but have not developed symptoms do not transmit the virus.
On funeral arrangements, the public was cautioned against touching or washing the body of anyone who dies following a sudden illness involving fever or bleeding. Instead, families were advised to notify health authorities so that a safe and dignified burial could be arranged.
The advisory also urged individuals travelling from affected areas, those identified as contacts of suspected or confirmed cases, and anyone experiencing symptoms to avoid gatherings and seek guidance from health officials.
The association also warned against spreading rumours or stigmatising travellers, healthcare workers and people undergoing testing, noting that stigma could discourage individuals from reporting symptoms or seeking medical attention.
KMA urged the public to rely on official updates from the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and qualified healthcare professionals.
The advisory comes amid heightened public attention to Ebola prevention, with the association emphasising the importance of accurate information, early reporting of symptoms and responsible hygiene practices in protecting communities.
