A man has died after reportedly falling from a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park in the United States, with several other people also injured, according to police.
Cobb County police confirmed the death following the incident on Monday at the amusement park, located about 10 miles west of downtown Atlanta.
Witnesses who spoke to CNN affiliate WXIA said they saw the man fall from the Goliath roller coaster, one of about a dozen roller coasters at the park.
One witness told WXIA that the man was captured in a souvenir photograph taken during the ride. The Goliath is a steel roller coaster that reaches speeds of up to 70 miles per hour and rises to a height of approximately 200 feet, according to the park’s website.
Aerial footage from WXIA showed other riders being evacuated from the attraction after the incident. Rahim Hakmati, a season ticket holder who was at the park, told CNN he arrived as large groups of visitors were leaving.
Hakamati said he heard reports that someone had fallen from Goliath and later saw security personnel directing people away from the ride, which had stopped on the lift hill. He and other visitors were eventually escorted out of the park.
He added that he had visited the amusement park the previous night and ridden Goliath without noticing anything unusual.
In a statement, Six Flags Over Georgia said it was deeply saddened by the incident and extended its condolences to the deceased man’s family, friends and loved ones.
A park spokesperson said similar attractions at other Six Flags parks across the United States had been temporarily closed as a precaution. The Georgia park was already scheduled to remain closed on Tuesday.
The incident has drawn renewed attention to ride safety at the amusement park operator, coming nearly two weeks after Six Flags Magic Mountain in California announced plans to permanently close its X2 roller coaster.
The decision followed a CNN investigation that reported more than a dozen cases of serious injuries and hospitalisations associated with X2, including at least two deaths.
Six Flags Magic Mountain President Brian Oerding said the ride had consistently passed multiple safety tests but that the park had decided to close it, citing the importance of guest confidence and safety.
Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair in 2024, creating what the report described as the largest amusement park operator in the United States.
Police have confirmed the fatal incident at the Georgia park, but further details surrounding the circumstances of the man’s fall were not provided in the report.
