Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has been suspended from the precincts of Parliament after refusing to apologise for claims that senior government officials were pressured to invest in Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) shares.
Nyoro was suspended after he failed to substantiate the allegations when asked to withdraw them and apologise.
The MP had alleged that chief executive officers of government agencies were called by the President and directed to invest in the KPC initial public offering (IPO).
Speaking after the suspension, Nyoro maintained his position, saying he had not been given adequate time to substantiate his allegations.
“It is unfortunate that the houses that should be protecting Kenyans have become part of the Executive. I made an allegation that the CEOs were called by the President to invest in KPC. They know they were called,” Nyoro said.
He argued that it was wrong for the Executive to pressure people, including retirees, to invest in an IPO.
“I maintain that it is wrong for the Executive to force people like retirees to invest in an IPO,” he said.
Nyoro said he would continue raising concerns over the KPC share sale, particularly the protection of pensioners’ investments.
“I will continue doing my bit to make sure that we protect the pensioners’ investment. Nitaendelea kuongea mambo ya wananchi,” he said.
The suspension comes as Parliament continues to scrutinise matters surrounding the KPC share sale and the government’s wider privatisation programme.
