The New York Times Company has entered exclusive negotiations to acquire film-focused social media platform Letterboxd in a deal reportedly valued at approximately 330 million US dollars.

The discussions were reported by The New York Times, which cited people familiar with the negotiations. No agreement has been reached, and the talks could still collapse.

Letterboxd allows users to rate films, write reviews, maintain watchlists and share recommendations with other movie enthusiasts.

Founded in 2011 by Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, the platform has grown significantly in recent years, attracting approximately 30 million users.

The proposed acquisition would expand the Times Company’s business beyond its traditional news operations, following previous purchases including The Athletic, Wirecutter and the popular word game Wordle.

The proposed price would value Letterboxd at more than 20 times its projected earnings of approximately 15 million US dollars for 2026.

Under the reported terms, the platform’s co-founders could remain involved in its management, while Letterboxd would continue operating as a standalone service.

The Times Company is also expected to integrate its advertising technology with the platform if the transaction is completed.

The potential deal highlights the growing commercial value of online communities built around entertainment, particularly platforms with large and highly engaged audiences.
