The National Police Service (NPS) communications heads have completed a three-day election preparedness training aimed at strengthening responsible journalism and effective communication ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
The training, which concluded on Friday, October 16, 2026, was held in Nakuru and organised by International Justice Mission (IJM) Kenya in collaboration with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK).
The programme brought together journalists and communication professionals to enhance their capacity to report accurately, ethically and responsibly during the electoral period.
Key areas covered included electoral accountability, information verification, digital information integrity, the use of artificial intelligence in journalism, conflict-sensitive reporting, hate speech mitigation and journalist safety.
Communications heads from NPS Headquarters, the Kenya Police Service (KPS), the Administration Police Service (APS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) engaged journalists on police communication and effective media relations.
The discussions emphasised the importance of timely, accurate and factual information in strengthening public trust and confidence in the electoral process.
The training comes as media organisations and security agencies prepare for the 2027 General Election, when responsible reporting, credible information and effective communication are expected to play a critical role in promoting transparency and peaceful electoral processes.
The initiative also underscores the importance of collaboration between the media and law enforcement agencies in addressing misinformation, preventing the spread of hate speech and ensuring the public receives reliable information throughout the election period.
