One person has died while another sustained serious injuries after a sand-laden lorry overturned near Cifika along the Kabarnet–Showground road, leading to Kabarnet Airstrip.
The driver died at the scene, while the turnboy suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
Preliminary reports indicate that the lorry had experienced mechanical problems for a long time, with suspected brake failure cited as a possible factor in the crash.
Police officers responding to the accident reportedly used a hearse to transport the deceased’s body after a police vehicle was said to be unavailable.
A county ambulance arrived later, by which time the body and injured occupant had already been removed from the scene.
Officers from Kabarnet Police Post have commenced investigations into the incident.
Motorists and other road users have been advised to exercise caution along the steep, winding route as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
