One person has died and three others sustained injuries following a road accident along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway at Ehendwe in Vihiga County on Sunday evening.
The crash occurred after a motorcycle travelling from Majengo towards Mbale reportedly lost control and rammed into a stationary lorry that had broken down along the busy highway.
Witnesses said the motorcycle was moving at high speed before the rider lost control and collided with the truck, resulting in the fatal crash.
The injured victims were rushed to hospital for treatment, although their condition had not been established by the time of publication.
Residents Demand Urgent Road Safety Measures
The latest incident has renewed concerns among residents and motorists over the rising risk of accidents along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway, particularly around Ehendwe, where locals say road safety challenges remain a major concern.
Residents are now calling on the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to urgently intervene and address sections of the highway they consider hazardous.
Among their demands are repairs to damaged road sections, expansion of the highway to accommodate increasing traffic, and the installation of speed bumps at strategic points to curb speeding.
They argue that the proposed measures would help protect motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians, especially in areas experiencing heavy traffic and frequent road-user interactions.
Residents have warned that failure to address the identified safety concerns could expose more people to danger and lead to further loss of life.
Police Expected to Investigate Crash
The fatal collision has intensified calls for authorities to assess accident-prone sections of the highway and implement lasting solutions to improve road safety.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including witness accounts that the motorcycle was travelling at high speed before colliding with the stationary lorry.
The incident once again highlights concerns over speeding and the risks posed by broken-down vehicles left along busy roads, with residents urging relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent similar tragedies.
