The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a police constable suspected of being the gunman who shot and killed prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi.
The DCI said Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot was arrested following an intensive investigation into the lawyer’s murder, which occurred on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road, Nairobi.
Detectives have also recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident.
According to the DCI, ballistic examination has confirmed that the firearm was used in the shooting that claimed Mbobu’s life, providing what investigators described as a significant forensic breakthrough.
The lawyer was shot in a targeted attack while driving home from work along Magadi Road.
Investigators have further linked Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, to the operation.
The DCI alleges that Sang coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe, who is already in police custody in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Dr Mutiso was fatally shot on the morning of July 29, 2026, in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The DCI said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mbobu’s murder, including the motive, planning and execution of the attack.
Cheruiyot remains in police custody pending processing and arraignment in court.
The DCI said it will continue pursuing all persons suspected of involvement in the murder, regardless of their position or affiliation.
