The National Police Service (NPS) has urged all road users to strictly observe traffic rules as schools close for the end-of-year holiday, warning that heavier movement of students across the country will raise the risk of accidents.

In a press release issued today and signed by Director of Corporate Communication and Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the NPS said it expects a significant increase in the number of pupils and students travelling home to reunite with their families. The service said this will push up traffic volumes on roads nationwide.

The NPS said it will work with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to step up public sensitisation and enforcement of traffic regulations. The enforcement will target:

  • Speeding
  • Unroadworthy vehicles
  • Overloading
  • Failure to use safety belts

School transport vehicles will also be subjected to thorough inspection to confirm they meet all safety standards. The police said more officers will be deployed to enforce traffic laws rigorously.

Motorists were asked to stick to designated speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and stay off mobile phones while at the wheel. Pedestrians and motorcyclists were also urged to remain vigilant and comply with traffic regulations.

Parents and guardians were encouraged to entrust their children only to reputable and roadworthy public service vehicles. The NPS also asked the public to report reckless driving or unroadworthy vehicles to the nearest police station or through the following channels:

The service said it remains committed to keeping the roads safe during the holiday period and beyond, and called on all Kenyans to work together to prevent road accidents.
