Police in Nigeria have recovered the skulls and bones of at least 28 people from suspected criminal camps in forests in Abia State.
The remains were discovered on Saturday in the Umuaku and Nneato forests in Umunneochi area during a security operation targeting suspected criminal activity.
Abia State Police spokeswoman Maureen Chinaka said the operation was launched following intelligence reports about criminal activities in the area.
She said suspects fled when police arrived, prompting officers to dismantle the camps and recover the human remains.
Police suspect the remains could belong to victims of kidnapping, although forensic examinations and further investigations are underway to establish their identities and how they died.
Security officers have intensified surveillance in the area as they continue efforts to track down the suspects who escaped.
