Formula 1 is poised to make its long-awaited return to Africa, with Rwanda targeting a place on the F1 calendar from 2030.

An agreement has reportedly been reached to bring a Grand Prix to Rwanda, with an official announcement expected later this year and possibly within the coming weeks.

If confirmed, the race would mark Formula 1’s return to the African continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix, which was held at Kyalami.

Rwanda’s bid has been driven by President Paul Kagame, who has championed the country’s ambition to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Kigali provided a major platform for the push in 2024 when the city hosted the FIA General Assemblies and Prize Giving Ceremony. Kagame used the occasion to formally announce Rwanda’s intention to pursue a Formula 1 race.

“I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is biding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa by formula 1 Grand Prix,” Kagame said.

“I assure you that we will approach this opportunity with the seriousness and the commitment it deserves,” he added.

The proposed Grand Prix would represent a major milestone for Rwanda and could restore Africa’s presence on the Formula 1 calendar after more than three decades.

The development also comes as Formula 1 continues to expand its global footprint, with Africa remaining the only inhabited continent without a race on the current calendar.

Rwanda’s potential entry would therefore not only bring Formula 1 back to Africa but also position Kigali as a major destination for international motorsport.
