A Tanzanian couple has been arrested in Mombasa over allegations of drugging unsuspecting bus passengers and stealing their valuables.

The suspects, identified as Pius Paskale Frugenze, 52, and his wife, Redempta Revelian Kuleta, 47, were arrested by detectives from Makupa Police Station following investigations into a September 18 incident involving a passenger travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa.

According to the investigations, the passenger was aboard a Dreamline bus when the person seated next to him allegedly stupefied him, causing him to lose consciousness.

He later regained consciousness at Tudor Sub-County Hospital, where he discovered that his bag and other personal belongings were missing.

The incident prompted detectives to launch investigations, with forensic leads eventually taking them to Magongo, where the couple was arrested.

A search of their residence reportedly yielded the complainant’s HP laptop and iPhone 17 Pro Max, providing detectives with a major breakthrough in the case.

Police also recovered a collection of items suspected to have been stolen from other victims, including mobile phones, 20 phone chargers, 10 wristwatches, 20 wallets and assorted clothing.

Detectives further recovered substances suspected to be stupefying drugs, which are now part of the evidence being examined as investigations continue.

The couple remains in police custody undergoing processing ahead of their expected arraignment.

Meanwhile, the recovered items have been detained by detectives as exhibits as police work to establish whether the suspects could be linked to other similar incidents involving passengers travelling by road.

Investigators are also expected to establish the source and intended use of the substances recovered from the suspects’ residence.
