The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) received bids worth Sh68.5 billion for Treasury bills at its October 15 auction, more than double the Sh28 billion it had offered, signalling strong investor demand for government securities.

The 91-day Treasury bills attracted the highest demand, receiving bids worth Sh49.8 billion, followed by Sh12.1 billion for the 182-day bills and Sh6.6 billion for the 364-day paper.

CBK accepted bids worth Sh52.3 billion across the three maturities, with the 91-day bills accounting for Sh34.2 billion of the accepted amount.

The average accepted interest rates stood at 8.75 per cent for the 91-day bills, 8.86 per cent for the 182-day bills and 9.04 per cent for the 364-day bills.

The results show that investors continued to favour short-term government securities, with the 91-day bills attracting the largest share of bids in the auction.

Treasury bills are short-term government securities issued by the CBK on behalf of the National Treasury to raise funds for government financing needs. Investors earn returns based on the difference between the purchase price and the face value paid at maturity.

The next Treasury bill auction will offer Sh28 billion across the three maturities, with bids scheduled to close on October 22, 2026.
