US President Donald Trump has said the war between the United States and Iran will end “very, very soon,” while declining to give a specific timeline for when the fighting could stop.
Trump made the remarks and repeated his claim that the United States would win the conflict. He also said Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
The comments came as diplomatic efforts continue through Qatar, which has been acting as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran in an attempt to end the conflict.
According to Reuters, Qatari mediators have been carrying messages between the two sides, with discussions focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran had proposed a seven-day trust-building plan that included steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring normal maritime traffic. Trump had previously rejected the proposal, although diplomatic contacts have continued.
Trump’s latest remarks came after he said on September 28 that US officials had been speaking with mediators involved in efforts to end the war. He said at the time that the United States would win the war “very soon”.
However, there has been no announced final agreement to end the conflict. On September 29, Trump also said he did not know whether Iran would “give up yet,” indicating that negotiations and the military confrontation remained unresolved.
The latest developments come as Qatar continues its shuttle diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, with the sequencing of proposed steps reportedly remaining a key point of disagreement in the negotiations.
