US President Donald Trump has picked conservative commentator Katie Zacharia to take over as White House press secretary, continuing his preference for appointing trusted allies to key communications positions.

Zacharia, a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, is set to become the sixth chief spokesperson across Trump’s two presidential administrations.

Trump announced the decision on Friday through his Truth Social platform, highlighting Zacharia’s longstanding support for his political movement and her involvement in previous election campaigns.

The president described her as loyal and deeply committed to the Make America Great Again movement, adding that she had helped his campaigns in seven swing states where he claimed victories.

Trump said he expected Zacharia to deliver strong results and maintain effective working relationships with journalists, the public and members of his administration.

In response, Zacharia said serving Trump and the American people during the country’s 250th anniversary year would be a career-defining honour.

She added that she looked forward to engaging with the White House press corps and reporters nationwide to communicate the administration’s achievements.

Zacharia, 42, has built a career at the intersection of Republican politics, conservative media and legal practice. She is a regular contributor to conservative television networks, including Fox News and Newsmax, where she has defended Trump’s policies and political decisions.

Her experience in government dates back to 2006, when she worked in the White House Office of Political Affairs under former President George W. Bush. She also interned at the Republican National Committee before moving into other political and legal roles.

Earlier this year, Zacharia briefly served at the Department of Homeland Security, leaving after approximately one month. She later attributed her departure to the strain that travelling between California and Washington placed on her family.

She subsequently joined Trump’s media organisation, which operates the Truth Social platform, as a senior communications adviser.

Her professional background also includes serving as general counsel for Fix California, a conservative non-profit founded by Ric Grenell, a close Trump ally who now serves as Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions. Zacharia also spent nearly two years clerking at a law firm in Beijing, China, beginning in 2011.

The appointment follows the departure of Karoline Leavitt, who left the White House press secretary role in August, reportedly to take up a position with Fox News. Trump had previously praised Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides.

The press secretary’s responsibilities extend beyond conducting daily briefings. The role involves managing media relations, coordinating official messaging, responding to journalists’ inquiries and advising the president on communications strategy.

Analysts say Zacharia’s selection reflects the administration’s emphasis on loyalty while highlighting the growing importance of direct political communication.

Justin Buchler, a political science professor at Case Western Reserve University, told the BBC that personal affiliation and loyalty have been major considerations in Trump’s second-term appointments.

Yanna Krupnikov, a political scientist at the University of Michigan, said modern political communication increasingly focuses on delivering targeted messages directly to ordinary citizens through social media and other channels.

Zacharia’s close ties to Trump’s political and media operations could help advance that approach, although her ability to manage the demanding relationship between the White House and the press corps will be central to her success in the role.
