A bus driver has been charged with 12 counts following a road accident that killed two Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students and injured other passengers along the Ahero–Awasi Highway in Kisumu County.

Jotham Murumba Wanjala appeared before Nyando Senior Principal Magistrate Evelyn Makungu Onzere, where he denied all the charges.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) charged Wanjala with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, contrary to Section 46 of the Traffic Act, over the deaths of Evance Odiwour Otieno and Rooney Owek Gakumba.

He also faces 10 counts of driving without due care and attention under Section 49(1) of the Traffic Act, relating to injuries sustained by 10 passengers.

The court heard that Wanjala allegedly drove the bus at a speed and in a manner that endangered other road users before losing control and veering off the road.

The accident occurred on August 7, 2026, in the Boya area along the Ahero–Awasi Highway in Nyando Sub-County, as the students travelled to attend the funeral of their former colleague, Elvis Otieno, popularly known as Beast.

Wanjala, who pleaded not guilty to all 12 counts, was released on a bond of KSh500,000, with no alternative cash bail.

The case is scheduled for mention on November 5, 2026.
