The United States has raised its travel advisory for Kenya from Level 2 to Level 3, urging American citizens to reconsider travel to the country over security threats, violent crime, kidnapping and health concerns linked to the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

In an advisory issued on Monday, October 19, 2026, the US Department of State cited the risk of terrorism, armed attacks, kidnappings and dangerous road conditions as among the key concerns facing travellers to Kenya.

“The Department of State increased its Travel Advisory for Kenya from Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) to Level 3 (Reconsider Travel),” the advisory stated.

The warning highlights the possibility of terrorist attacks, including bombings, grenade attacks, armed assaults and kidnappings, with potential targets ranging from government buildings and hotels to tourist destinations, transport hubs, shopping malls, markets and places of worship.

While the overall advisory for Kenya has been raised to Level 3, Washington has maintained its highest travel warning, Level 4, for specific areas considered particularly dangerous.

The listed areas include Eastleigh and Kibera in Nairobi, parts of the northeastern and coastal regions, as well as designated areas of West Pokot, Turkana and Marsabit counties.

The Level 4 designation advises against travel to the affected areas due to heightened security risks.

The advisory comes as Kenya continues to respond to an outbreak of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease linked to infections involving people connected to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

As of October 19, Kenya had confirmed eight Ebola cases, according to the information provided in the report.

The latest reported case involved a 49-year-old hospital attendant suspected of exposure while handling utensils and linens used by the initial patient.

The outbreak has heightened concerns over disease surveillance, contact tracing and infection prevention as health authorities work to contain further transmission.

Beyond terrorism and public health concerns, the US government has warned American travellers about armed carjackings, robberies, home invasions, sexual assaults and kidnappings for ransom.

The advisory also cautions that demonstrations and protests linked to political or economic grievances can turn violent and disrupt traffic, including on major roads.

Travellers have further been urged to exercise caution on Kenyan roads due to dangerous driving conditions and the risk of traffic accidents.

The US Department of State has advised citizens travelling to Kenya to monitor local news, avoid demonstrations and large crowds, remain vigilant in public places and maintain reliable emergency communication plans.

The Level 3 advisory does not amount to a blanket ban on travel to Kenya. Instead, it urges Americans to reconsider their travel plans in light of the identified risks, while the Level 4 warnings apply to specific areas.

The updated advisory comes amid heightened attention to Kenya’s security environment and public health preparedness as the country manages the Ebola outbreak.
