The United States has welcomed engagement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda aimed at securing lasting peace and shared prosperity under the Washington Accords.

In a statement, the US said an Operations Order would guide the DRC’s efforts to neutralise the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and Rwanda’s disengagement of its forces.

The order is part of efforts to advance the commitments made by the two countries under the Washington Accords.

The FDLR is an armed group operating in eastern DRC, and its presence has been a longstanding source of tension between Kinshasa and Kigali.
