Detectives in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, have arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with the death of a mentally challenged man who was allegedly attacked by a mob after being mistaken for a thief.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Apollo, was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation in Milimani Location, Kiminini Sub-County, as detectives continued investigations into the incident.

The deceased, 35-year-old Dennis Imboha, had reportedly wandered away from his home before ending up at a neighbouring homestead.

According to investigators, residents who encountered him allegedly suspected that he was a thief and attacked him.

Imboha sustained multiple serious injuries during the assault and was rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Hospital for treatment. He later died while receiving medical attention.

Following his death, detectives visited the scene and processed it as part of efforts to establish what happened and identify those involved in the assault.

His body was moved to the hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Apollo is currently being processed by detectives ahead of his arraignment as investigations continue. Police are also pursuing additional leads in an effort to identify other people who may have participated in the attack.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, warning that suspected offenders should instead be reported to the authorities for appropriate legal action.

The DCI said investigations will continue until the circumstances surrounding Imboha’s death are fully established and those found responsible are brought before the law.
