Transport disrupted along Waiyaki Way after University of Nairobi students took to the streets to protest the ongoing lecturers’ strike.

The demonstrations come as students continue to feel the effects of the industrial action, which has disrupted learning in public universities across the country.

The University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) had earlier issued the government with a 72-hour ultimatum to resolve the dispute, warning that students would stage demonstrations if their concerns were not addressed by Wednesday, October 21.

The students have faulted the prolonged standoff between university lecturers and the government, saying it has left them uncertain about their academic progress.

Lecturers, under the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), are demanding the implementation of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement, salary and allowance adjustments, and payment of outstanding arrears.

The strike has disrupted teaching and other academic activities, raising concerns over delayed examinations, graduation plans and the time students may need to complete their studies.

The latest demonstrations added pressure on the government and university stakeholders to reach an agreement and restore learning.

Further details on the number of students involved and whether police intervened had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
