The Linda Mwananchi movement has condemned an attack on former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Githongo Market in Central Imenti, Meru County.
In a statement signed by its Head of Communication at the National Secretariat, Pauline Njoroge, the movement said Mwangaza attended the event after receiving an official invitation from the County Commissioner.
The statement claimed that her vehicles were destroyed, equipment stolen and several members of her staff injured during the incident. It also cited an earlier reported attack at Gituine Village in Igembe Central.
Linda Mwananchi criticised the Council of Governors for remaining silent over what it described as threats and intimidation against political leaders, including Mwangaza and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
The movement said the safety and dignity of leaders should be protected regardless of their political affiliation, calling on the Council of Governors to speak out against attacks targeting elected and former leaders.
It also demanded an immediate end to the alleged use of hired groups to attack opposition leaders and called for prompt, thorough and impartial investigations to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The movement did not name those allegedly behind the attack on Mwangaza in the statement provided.
