Kenya has secured a KSh20.7 billion conservation financing deal aimed at protecting 17.3 million hectares of critical ecosystems and wildlife habitats over the next decade.
The Thamani Asili initiative will bring together KSh10.3 billion in international donor funding and a matching contribution from the Kenyan government to support the establishment of new conservation areas and improve the management of existing ones.
The programme will focus on four key regions, including Tsavo and the Maasai Mara ecosystem, which are home to elephants, rhinos, lions and other wildlife.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said the initiative would support wildlife conservation while benefiting farmers and communities living alongside protected areas.
The funding is expected to strengthen conservation efforts and support the long-term protection of Kenya’s natural resources and biodiversity.
