The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, with residents urged to remain alert for possible flash floods and poor visibility.

The department said rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours was expected in the Coast region, Northeastern Kenya, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands, including parts of Nairobi, and sections of the Southeastern Lowlands.

The forecast covers counties including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo.

Other areas of concern include Nakuru, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Laikipia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Migori, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, Kajiado, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nyandarua.

Parts of Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni are also expected to receive rainfall.

The rains may be accompanied by gusty conditions and strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 46 kilometres per hour, particularly in coastal, eastern and northern regions.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant for flash floods and reduced visibility while travelling.

The department also cautioned that flooding may occur downstream, even in areas that have not experienced heavy rainfall, as water flows from other locations.

Residents have further been urged to avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms and to keep away from windows with metal grilles to reduce exposure to lightning-related risks.
