The Ministry of Roads and Transport has pledged to strengthen road safety measures following the fatal head-on collision at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, that claimed 22 lives and left several others injured.

The crash occurred at around 7:45am on Sunday, October 25, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, involving a passenger bus belonging to Power of the Word Church International in Mombasa and a commercial cement tipper truck.

The injured were taken to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital and Kambu Level 4 Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary findings suggest that improper overtaking by the bus may have contributed to the collision, although investigations by the National Police Service, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and other relevant agencies are ongoing.

In response to the latest tragedy, the ministry said it was pursuing coordinated interventions targeting road infrastructure, traffic enforcement and driver training.

Under infrastructure improvements, the government plans to strengthen the management of accident-prone road sections, commonly known as black spots, through targeted engineering interventions.

The ministry also intends to intensify enforcement against dangerous driving, speeding and improper overtaking, which are among the road safety concerns highlighted following the crash.

Further measures will focus on structured training and compliance for commercial vehicle and public service vehicle drivers, alongside regulatory frameworks including the Commercial Vehicle, Vehicle Inspection and School Transport Regulations of 2026.

The Kanga accident comes weeks after another fatal crash at Salama, near Mtito Andei, on October 3, which reportedly claimed 17 lives.

The latest incidents have renewed concerns over road safety along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway and calls for stronger enforcement and preventive measures to reduce road deaths.
