Uganda has reported no new Ebola cases since declaring its Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak over on July 28, 2026, with 60 contacts linked to a recent case involving a Kenyan traveller completing the mandatory monitoring period without developing symptoms.
Uganda’s Health Minister, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has reaffirmed the country’s Ebola-free status, reassuring the public that all 60 individuals identified as contacts of the recent case have completed 21 days of monitoring and been discharged.
Speaking to the media, Baryomunsi said no confirmed Ebola cases had been recorded in Uganda since the country declared the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak over in July.
He also confirmed that Kasese District has no confirmed Ebola cases and has recorded no deaths from the disease, easing concerns over the possible spread of the virus following the case involving a Kenyan traveller.
However, the minister cautioned that vigilance remains necessary as Ebola transmission continues in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Ministry of Health has intensified screening at border crossing points and Entebbe International Airport as part of measures to prevent the virus from entering the country.
Authorities have also strengthened community-based surveillance and expanded cross-border cooperation to improve preparedness and response to potential cases.
As part of regional containment efforts, Uganda has supported the establishment of three Ebola treatment units in the DRC, with a combined capacity of 240 beds.
Baryomunsi urged the public to continue cooperating with health authorities and adhering to preventive measures, emphasizing the importance of regional collaboration in containing the disease at its source.
The minister’s update comes amid heightened regional surveillance efforts aimed at preventing further cross-border transmission and protecting communities from the threat of Ebola.
Health authorities continue to stress the importance of early detection, prompt reporting of suspected cases and coordinated responses among neighbouring countries to strengthen public health security.
