Lawyer Miguna Miguna has criticised the punishment imposed on former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife following their involvement in a multi-million-shilling corruption scandal, questioning whether the penalties imposed on corruption offenders are sufficient to deter the theft of public funds.
In a strongly worded statement, Miguna argued that imposing a relatively small fine in cases involving large sums of public money undermines accountability and public confidence in the justice system.
“In Kenya, you steal Ksh588 million PUBLIC MONEY, get fined Ksh13 million, keep Ksh567 million so that you can share it with the judge/magistrate and DPP, and walk free. A banana slave plantation,” Miguna stated.
The case stems from a disputed KSh588.7 million road construction tender awarded by the Kiambu County Government during the 2017/2018 financial year.
Investigators alleged that public funds linked to the contract were channelled through businesses associated with the accused.
Miguna’s remarks have added to the public debate over whether Kenya’s punishment for corruption is strong enough to deter the misuse of public resources.
