President William Ruto has announced that the government has set aside Sh1.2 billion to facilitate the completion of the Mombasa Stadium, with the project expected to be ready by April next year.
Ruto said the construction of the stadium had taken longer than anticipated due to challenges surrounding the initial contract.
According to the President, the government was forced to review the project’s construction costs to ensure that public funds were properly utilised.
He said the additional allocation will help address the outstanding works and put the stadium on course for completion within the set timeline.
Ruto also revealed that he had held discussions with FIFA President Gianni Infantino on plans to develop another stadium in the Shanzu area of Mombasa.
The proposed Shanzu stadium is expected to form part of wider efforts to expand Kenya’s sports infrastructure and provide modern facilities capable of hosting major football competitions.
The announcement comes as the government continues to invest in sports infrastructure ahead of major international football events and tournaments expected to be hosted in Kenya.
