Aston Villa continued their impressive UEFA Champions League campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Norwegian side Viking FK at Villa Park on Wednesday night.
Unai Emery’s men dominated large spells of the Matchday Three encounter, scoring twice in the first half before a second-half own goal extended their advantage. Viking managed a late consolation but could not prevent the hosts from collecting all three points.
Villa broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Ross Barkley rose highest to head home Ibrahim Mbaye’s corner, rewarding the hosts for their early attacking pressure.
The home side continued to create opportunities, with Emiliano Buendía missing chances to increase the lead before eventually finding the target from the penalty spot.
Buendía converted in the 37th minute after a VAR review led to a penalty being awarded following a foul on Alysson inside the box. The Argentine kept his composure to send the ball into the bottom corner, giving Villa a comfortable 2-0 advantage at half-time.
Viking showed greater attacking intent after the restart as they attempted to get back into the contest. However, Villa remained dangerous on the counterattack and capitalised on their opponents’ defensive vulnerability.
The decisive third goal arrived in the 62nd minute when Alysson’s delivery caused problems in the Viking defence, with Henrik Heggheim inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.
Despite trailing by three goals, Viking continued to push forward and were rewarded in the 84th minute when Peter Christiansen found the net with a fine finish, giving the visitors a late consolation.
The goal provided a measure of encouragement for the Norwegian side, but Villa comfortably managed the closing stages to secure another memorable European night at Villa Park.
The victory gives Aston Villa three wins from their opening three Champions League league-phase matches, following earlier successes against Club Brugge and Fenerbahçe.
For Emery, the result further underlines his side’s growing confidence and consistency in European competition as they continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages.
Viking, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their second-half response but face the task of improving defensively after conceding three goals against an opponent that made its attacking opportunities count.
Aston Villa will now look to carry their winning momentum into their next European fixture as they seek to maintain their strong start to the competition.
