Bayern Munich and Arsenal played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, with Declan Rice scoring a late equaliser to deny the German giants victory at the Allianz Arena.
The Matchday Three league-phase encounter produced four goals as both sides demonstrated their attacking quality in a fiercely contested European showdown.
Arsenal took the lead in the 25th minute through Eberechi Eze, who finished after a superb long pass from Martin Ødegaard. Eze had come on early following an injury to Bukayo Saka, but made an immediate impact by putting the visitors ahead.
Bayern responded strongly and restored parity in the 35th minute when Alphonso Davies found the net after a well-worked move initiated by Harry Kane, sending the teams into the half-time break level at 1-1.
The hosts returned from the interval with renewed intensity and created several opportunities to take the lead. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also made important contributions, while Arsenal’s David Raya was called upon to keep the visitors in the contest.
Bayern eventually moved ahead in the 61st minute after Kane converted a penalty, giving the home side a 2-1 advantage and putting them on course for a valuable Champions League victory.
However, Arsenal refused to surrender and continued searching for a way back into the match. Their persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Rice fired home after being set up by Viktor Gyökeres, restoring parity and silencing the home crowd.
Both teams pushed for a decisive winner in the closing stages, but neither could find the breakthrough as the contest ended in a share of the spoils.
The result leaves Arsenal with seven points from their opening three league-phase matches, while Bayern move to five points, having recorded their second draw in the competition.
For Arsenal, Rice’s late intervention secured a valuable away point against one of Europe’s most formidable sides. Bayern, meanwhile, will rue their inability to protect their second-half lead despite taking control of the game for significant periods.
The 2-2 result keeps the Champions League league phase finely poised as both clubs continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout rounds.
