The High Court in Bomet has sentenced Michael Kerich to 30 years in prison for killing his 74-year-old father following a domestic dispute.

The sentence was secured by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) after Kerich admitted to the offence through a plea bargaining agreement.

Court proceedings established that Kerich attacked his elderly father while he was asleep at night, inflicting fatal injuries using a panga.

He had initially been charged with murder contrary to Sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code but later pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter under a plea agreement filed before the court.

During sentencing, the prosecution, led by Counsel Judith Koech, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing the aggravating circumstances surrounding the killing.

Koech also presented a victim impact statement outlining the trauma and psychological distress suffered by the deceased’s family following the loss of their loved one.

In his ruling, Justice Julius Ng’arng’ar sentenced Kerich to serve 30 years in prison, bringing the case to a close at the Bomet High Court.
