French supercomputer manufacturer Bull has entered a preliminary partnership with Schwarz Digits, the technology arm of German retail giant Schwarz Group, to develop artificial intelligence computing services operating under European jurisdiction.

Under the proposed arrangement, Schwarz Digits will provide cloud services through its STACKIT platform, while Bull will manufacture the computing equipment used to support the infrastructure.

The companies plan to jointly design servers for data centres, with the possibility of expanding the partnership to include SAP business software.

The agreement comes as European businesses and governments seek greater control over the infrastructure used to store data and run AI applications.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the proposed partnership.
