US Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war with Iran for the Republican Party’s losses in the November 3 midterm elections, saying the conflict pushed some supporters of President Donald Trump to vote for Democrats.

In a lengthy statement shared on X on Wednesday, November 4, Vance said the party’s defeat was not primarily caused by poor voter turnout, arguing that Republican supporters had turned out but that many had switched sides.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance stated.

He added that many Americans who voted for Trump and Vance in the 2024 presidential election had supported Democratic candidates in the latest polls.

According to Vance, a pollster he consulted identified four major concerns among voters who had turned away from Republicans: ending the war with Iran, addressing the rising cost of living and inflation, putting America first, and changing the United States’ relationship with Israel.

“Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats,” he said.

Vance’s remarks came after Democrats made significant gains in the midterm elections, taking control of both chambers of Congress, according to projections reported by US media.

President Trump also acknowledged that the war with Iran had contributed to the Republican losses, although he maintained that launching the military campaign was the right decision.

Vance’s assessment, however, differs from preliminary voter polling that suggests the economy and government corruption were more prominent concerns for many Americans.

An ABC News voter poll found that 55 per cent of voters considered government corruption crucial to their vote, while 49 per cent cited the cost of living. About 34 per cent identified the war in Iran as a crucial factor.

The vice president also suggested that Republicans needed to reconsider aspects of their political messaging and immigration enforcement approach, including placing greater focus on businesses that hire undocumented workers, while rejecting proposals for amnesty.

His comments signal growing debate within the Republican Party over the factors behind its electoral losses and the direction the party should take ahead of future elections.
