The death toll from the fatal road accident at Kanga area near Mtito Andei along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway has risen to 23 after a church bus collided head-on with a lorry-trailer on Sunday morning.
The bus, belonging to Power of the Word Church International, was carrying 45 passengers when the crash occurred at around 7:45am on October 25, 2026.
According to an incident notification, the 23 people confirmed dead comprised 12 women, 10 men and one juvenile.
Another 25 passengers sustained injuries, some of them critical, and were taken to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was travelling towards Mombasa from western Kenya after attending a burial ceremony.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus had been overtaking several vehicles shortly before the collision.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said preliminary findings suggest improper overtaking may have contributed to the head-on collision, although the cause has not been conclusively established.
