Leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement have accused senior security officials of misconduct during the funeral of Opicho in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, claiming that public servants are operating under pressure amid the political climate.
In a statement shared on X, the movement said it had forgiven Deputy Inspector-General of Police Gilbert Masengeli and Lagat over what it described as disgraceful conduct at the funeral.
The statement did not detail the specific actions that prompted the criticism.
The leaders said they had nevertheless managed to address mourners and engage with residents during the event, despite the alleged conduct of the officials.
The movement further claimed that some public servants feared professional consequences if they were perceived to give opposition leaders too much freedom to conduct political activities.
It described the current administration as petty and suggested that public officers could face repercussions for allowing opposition figures room to operate.
The statement concluded with a political pledge, with the movement assuring Kenyans that they would experience what it called “true freedom” in 10 months.
The claims come amid political tensions between opposition-aligned leaders and the government. The specific allegations against Masengeli and Lagat, however, were not independently verified, and no response from the two officials was included in the statement.
