Real Madrid and Croatia legend Luka Modrić has called for Cristiano Ronaldo to be given a proper farewell by Portugal, amid growing uncertainty over the forward’s future with the national team.

Modrić, who has shared the pitch with Ronaldo during their time at Real Madrid, described the situation as unfortunate, particularly with the controversy unfolding in Ronaldo’s home country.

“Cristiano is the greatest player in the history of Portugal, and he deserves another farewell and another ending with the national team,” Modrić said.

The Croatian midfielder admitted that he was saddened by the developments surrounding Ronaldo, who has reportedly been involved in a fallout with Portugal’s head coach.

“It’s sad to see this happening to Cristiano in his own country,” Modrić added.

Ronaldo’s future with Portugal has come under renewed scrutiny, with questions emerging over whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue his international career or bring it to an end.

However, Modrić believes there is still room for the situation to be resolved and for Ronaldo to receive the send-off his career deserves.

“Still, I think they will find a solution, because Cris deserves, whether he retires or decides not to continue with the national team, to have a great farewell that reflects what he deserves,” he said.

Modrić acknowledged that he does not know the full details behind the dispute but expressed hope that the matter can be settled amicably.

“So, I don’t know exactly what happened, but I hope the situation gets resolved,” he said.

Ronaldo, 41, remains one of the most decorated players in football history and Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, making any potential end to his international career a major moment for the sport.

Modrić’s comments add to the growing calls for Portugal to ensure that Ronaldo’s international journey, whenever it ends, receives the recognition befitting one of the country’s greatest-ever sporting figures.
