A man accused of posing as a Mombasa County Government employee to defraud a foreign businessman of more than KSh4.9 million has been charged before the Shanzu Law Courts.

The accused, identified as Ernest Erigi, allegedly misrepresented himself as a county government employee and claimed he could use his purported position to help the businessman acquire land.

According to the prosecution, Erigi was not an employee of the Mombasa County Government despite allegedly using the claim to gain the businessman’s trust.

Erigi also faces a separate charge of refusing to have his fingerprints taken by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers in Bamburi.

The prosecution told the court that the accused had been sought by detectives for an extended period after allegedly evading arrest.

Erigi denied all four charges when he appeared before Shanzu Resident Magistrate Robert Mbogo.

The case highlights the risks of fraudulent land transactions and the importance of verifying the identities and official positions of individuals claiming to facilitate property deals.
