A Mombasa County enforcement officer has been shot dead, while two other officers sustained injuries following an attack by a gang of armed men at a revenue collection point in Likoni, Mombasa County.
The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. in the Checkpoint area, where the officers were carrying out county revenue collection duties when they were reportedly ambushed by a gang of suspected thieves believed to number more than 40.
According to police, the attackers were armed with crude weapons and allegedly stole an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition from a police officer during the incident.
The killing has sparked outrage from the deceased officer’s family, which has condemned the attack and called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved.
Likoni Member of Parliament Mishi Mboko has also called on security agencies to take responsibility and intensify efforts to address the reported attacks in the area.
Mboko urged security agencies to take decisive action to strengthen security and protect residents from further attacks.
Mombasa Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed the incident, saying investigations had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and track down the suspects.
The two injured officers are reported to have sustained injuries during the attack, although further details about their condition were not immediately provided.
Police investigations are ongoing as calls grow for those responsible for the killing and the alleged theft of the firearm to be brought to justice.
