Motorists using Thika Road have been cautioned to remain vigilant following reports of suspected thieves knocking on vehicle windows near Allsops in an apparent attempt to make drivers stop.
The reported tactic involves approaching motorists and knocking on their windows, potentially prompting them to pull over or investigate before attempting to rob them.
The alert warns that drivers may be vulnerable when they stop in response to unexpected approaches from strangers, particularly if the situation is intended to distract them or separate them from other road users.
Motorists have been advised to assess unexpected roadside interventions carefully and avoid stopping in isolated or unsafe locations without establishing whether the situation is genuine.
Where a driver suspects a mechanical problem or believes their vehicle may have been tampered with, they should prioritise reaching a safe, populated location before seeking assistance, where it is safe to continue driving.
The warning comes amid previous reports of criminals targeting motorists along Thika Road and nearby routes using distraction tactics.
In August 2018, the National Police Service warned motorists about attacks in which suspected criminals threw stones at vehicles in an attempt to make drivers stop before robbing them.
More recently, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations issued a warning about evolving vehicle theft tactics, including staged accidents, fake breakdowns and other methods designed to gain access to vehicles.
Motorists have been urged to report suspected criminal activity to the police and remain alert when travelling along busy roads and at locations where unexpected approaches may occur.
