Netflix has parted ways with its film division head, Dan Lin, according to entertainment industry reports, in the latest major leadership change at the streaming company.

Variety reported on October 20 that Lin had been dismissed after nearly three years in the role. His departure follows a round of layoffs that affected approximately 1,000 employees and the reported exit of chief content officer Bela Bajaria.

Lin joined Netflix in 2024 with a mandate to bring greater cost discipline to its film operations and broaden the company’s film slate. During his tenure, the division oversaw projects including KPop Demon Hunters, Happy Gilmore 2 and Frankenstein.

His approach included reducing large upfront payments to actors, restructuring teams and reassessing how the company invested in film production.

Netflix has faced increasing competition from free, advertising-supported platforms and the popularity of short-form video, while seeking to maintain engagement among subscribers and diversify its content offerings.

The company has also expanded its use of creators and podcasters as it looks for new ways to attract audiences.

Following the reported departure, former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice is expected to oversee the film division temporarily while Netflix considers its next appointment.

The leadership changes come as the streamer continues to adjust its content strategy and cost structure. Netflix had not publicly detailed a permanent replacement for Lin in the reporting available on Tuesday.

The changes could influence how the company selects film projects, manages production spending and competes in an increasingly crowded entertainment market.
