ODM leader reflects on bond with Raila Odinga as he thanks family, hospital staff and party members for a surprise celebration

Dr Oburu Oginga has paid an emotional tribute to his late younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, as he marked his birthday on October 15, a date that also marks the anniversary of Raila’s death.

In a heartfelt message shared on his social media page, Oburu described the coincidence as a profound connection between life and eternity, saying their brotherhood transcends physical separation and death.

“Physical separation cannot touch a brotherhood written in the heavens,” Oburu stated, reflecting on the significance of sharing his birthday with the date his younger brother departed.

He further expressed his enduring connection to the former Prime Minister, saying he carries Raila’s spirit within him and remains bound to him by a shared journey that transcends time.

“As I mark the anniversary of my birth, I carry your spirit within mine bound by a shared journey that transcends time, and an eternal connection that death has no power to break,” he said.

Oburu concluded his tribute with a solemn message to his late brother, saying, “Rest peacefully in the light, my brother.”

Beyond remembering Raila, the veteran politician expressed gratitude to those who organised a surprise celebration in his honour, describing their love and presence as a source of comfort on an emotionally significant day.

He thanked his spouses, Dr Ann Oburu and Mama Judith Oburu, for their continued love, warmth and care.

Oburu also acknowledged the Nairobi Hospital staff for their professionalism and kindness, alongside members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), who were represented at the occasion by party trustee Elder Joshua Kawino.

He extended special appreciation to his domestic staff and the team at Pawaa Centre for their dedication and efforts in organising the surprise.

“Your love and presence have made this solemn yet special day truly comforting. May God bless you all abundantly,” he said.

Oburu’s message captured the emotional weight of celebrating another year of life while remembering the loss of a close family member.

Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, remains a central figure in the country’s political history and in the ODM movement he helped build.

The October 15 message brought together personal remembrance, family gratitude and a reflection on the enduring bond between the two brothers, with Oburu honouring Raila’s memory while appreciating those who stood by him on the special day.
