Police in Busia County have launched a manhunt for a Toyota Probox driver who fled after causing a road accident that killed two people in the Total area of Busia Town on Wednesday morning.

The 6:00 am accident involved a Probox that reportedly knocked down three people, including a woman and two boda boda operators.

Busia County Police Commander Robinson Lang’at confirmed that the woman and one of the boda boda operators died on the spot, while police are pursuing the driver who escaped immediately after the crash.

Lang’at said security officers have intensified efforts to apprehend the suspect as investigations into the fatal incident continue.

The police commander also raised concerns over the growing threat posed by vehicles allegedly involved in smuggling activities, particularly the illegal transportation of sugar from neighbouring Uganda.

He linked the smuggling trade to several road accidents in the county, noting that vehicles used in the illegal business are often driven at excessive speeds, putting the lives of other road users at risk.

Lang’at said authorities are also pursuing individuals involved in the smuggling networks as part of efforts to curb the menace and prevent further loss of lives on Busia roads.
